Victorian homes in the charming town of Cape May, New Jersey, meet people on bicycles built for their two, those on benches enjoying a pink-orange sunset, or people-watching, and children body surfing, hoping to come in for a good landing, or those further out in the ocean jumping waves which I love to do!
Lovers also enjoy strolling hand in hand along the boardwalk or lying closely together on their colorful beach blankets, oblivious of all other sun bathers. The salt air and sea breeze comfortably surrounding othem.
In Cape May there is an enjoyable attraction in late summer when hatchling turtles run from their tiny eggs in their sandy nests, scratching the sand as they pull their bodies into the ocean which is waiting patiently for them, under the protective gaze of their mother turtles. They are thankfully protected. We hope that the Sea Gulls stay away from them.
This precious town with beautiful 1800 year old Victorian homes, painted beautifully and landscaped lovingly with hydrangeas, daisies, flowering trees and vines, daylilies, and hanging baskets, is protected from flooding by a cement and stone wall which holds the boardwalk up high.
Yes, this ancient ocean teeming with sea life such as crabs, mussels, starfish, jellyfish, clams, fish and larger things, can be a wonderful playground, but it can also be menacing when nature’s winds stir up a storm and toss the waves up high against the shore and wall.
But there is always a place for refuge, day or night, in the Pedestrian Mall. Tourists are so welcome, that a wide street is blocked off especially for us to stroll through art galleries or sit in an indoor or outdoor restaurant. It is compelling to hear the laughter and smell the mouth watering, delicious food fragrances coming from these restaurants! We like to have our dinner outside on the Pedestrian Mall under a colorful umbrella while enjoying the lovely, soft breezes. It’s also fun to watch families walk by with babies in carriages or with their beloved dogs walking beside them. Our favorite is an Italian restaurant served by Italian speaking waiters with food indescribably delicious!
If your appetite prefers an ice cream cone or fudge or a slice of pizza, you will find shops for each of these with places to enjoy them! You can even watch the fudge being made! If you lose something, never worry, these shops all have lost and found boxes which I discovered when I lost my sunglasses a few years ago.
Before you leave this charming town, be sure to look in each shop in the mall for just the right thing for you to remember this relaxing, enjoyable vacation all year round. It may be a Mermaid jewelry box, a glistening geode, a mug with a nautical scene on it, or a pair of dangling earrings. There is always something just waiting for you! However, your experiences here will certainly stay with you forever!
