Thank you for enjoying my poem! Right now the Black Birds flew away, probably because the suet is eaten! So my feeder is swarmed with small birds once again!

And yesterday a Cardinal briefly sat atop my leftmost shepherds crook for a few minutes, his bright red feathers entrancing me! I know crows are very smart, but whatever these birds are, they are not giving up on trying to feed on the squirrel proof feeder that closes upon his weight.

Jacqueline, I absolutely love this poem and image together. They drew me completely into the quiet intimacy of your rainy afternoon and the living drama unfolding around the feeders.

You captured so beautifully both the tenderness and the frustration of trying to create space for the smaller birds while those pesky blackbirds attempt to dominate everything in sight. Anyone who watches birds closely knows exactly this dynamic.

What touched me most, though, was the emotional arc of the piece — the waiting, the discouragement, and then that small return of hope with the arrival of the woodpecker. “My hope returns” landed so softly and truthfully.

This feels like a poem about much more than birds. Thank you for sharing such a deeply observant and heartfelt moment. ❤️
